What is Aluminium
Aluminium is a soft and light metal, used in many different products, spanning numerous industries. It is mined out of the ground in countries like China, Brazil, India and Guinea. It makes up some 8% of the earth’s crust and it is by far the most common, naturally occurring metal. This is followed by iron ore.
Aluminium has high chemical reactivity, which means it tends to bond with other materials to make compounds. Its these compounds that are mined with the aluminium then extracted and processed.
The primary source of aluminium is a ore called Bauxite. Bauxite is found in flat layers across the earth’s crust. Once an area containing the Bauxite ore is discovered, an open mine is formed, and the ore mined.
